52/17 Technique Timer

The 52/17 technique is based on a DeskTime study that found the most productive workers focus for 52 minutes then take a 17-minute break. Pomodorian lets you customize your timer to any interval: set it to 52/17 in settings and combine it with AI planning and ambient sounds.

Where the 52/17 Ratio Comes From

The number comes from a 2014 analysis by the time-tracking company DeskTime, which looked at usage data from its most productive users and found the top performers tended to work in bursts of about 52 minutes followed by a genuine 17-minute break, rather than grinding through longer uninterrupted stretches. It is an observational finding about a specific user base, not a universal law, but the ratio has stuck as a well-known alternative to 25/5.

When 52/17 Beats the Classic 25/5

The standard Pomodoro's 25 minutes suits fragmented task lists where interruptions are frequent and switching costs are lower, emails, small tickets, admin. A 52-minute block gives more room to reach a working state on a single demanding task, writing, analysis, focused coding, before the break resets you, which is why people doing fewer, larger tasks in a day often prefer it.

Setting It Up in Pomodorian

Open Settings and set the focus duration to 52 minutes and the short break to 17. There is no dedicated "52/17 mode", it is the same customizable timer used for every technique on this site, so the AI planner and ambient sounds work exactly the same way inside the longer sessions.
